Together, the municipalities of Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso, where this ancient technique is particularly prevalent, presented the certification program of “Filigrana de Portugal”, an initiative designed to offer a new guarantee of quality for consumers.

This certification, awarded by Aderecertifica, an entity accredited by the Instituto Português da Acreditação, in compliance with all the requirements of the National Certification System for Traditional Artisan Productions, recognizes the characteristics of artisanal and autonomous production.

So far, the process, which began in March 2017, has already granted the first certifications to 21 participating artisanal production units.

On the website of AORP - Associação de Ourivesaria e Relojoaria de Portugal, which is part of the Supervisory Committee for the certification of Filigrana de Portugal, it is stated that this filigree certification aims to “strengthen the relationship of trust with the
consumer, allowing them to reliably and more safely recognize artisanal filigree in its various forms of expression – jewelry, clothing, decoration, and other diverse items”.

At the same event, representatives of the municipalities announced an official application for filigree to be recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, “with the goal of preserving an identity that has incalculable cultural value for the country,” AORP highlights on its page.
